The Top 10 Websites For Free Images To Use On A Blog

A picture paints a thousand words, as the old saying goes.

I think its safe to say most bloggers appreciate that a good article should have a careful blend of text and visuals such as images, video, and infographics.

Readers don’t like reading mammoth blocks of continuous writing and visual elements make articles easier on the eye.

Sourcing Free Images

Once upon a time, sourcing quality images could be an expensive business. There were a few free image sites but the quality was pretty lame in most cases. iStockPhoto (before it was taken over by Getty Images) was fairly well priced but there wasn’t a great choice out there.

This changed with the advent of smartphones and other mobile devices. Almost overnight, there was a camera in everybody’s pocket and the world was blessed with millions of new amateur photographers.

Stock photo libraries evolved in parallel to the mobile revolution and we are now blessed with a plentiful supply of free image websites.

In this article, we’ve curated some of the biggest and best websites to source free images for your blog.

The mission of Pexels is “Empowering Creators”, and it’s safe to say this has held true. There are now thousands of free high-quality photos freely available on Pexels.

All images on the website can be safely used for commercial and non-commercial reasons.

Australian company Canva bought the Pexels website in 2019 but the licensing policies appear unchanged. It’s an excellent resource for Bloggers.

One of the most extensive photo vaults around, Pixabay boasts an inventory of over one million images.

Like Pexels, the growth of the site was powered by a community of creatives, sharing copyright-free images and videos.

In 2019, Canva purchased the website (along with Pexels), but the ethos remains the same.

Images come with a Pixabay License, which makes them safe to use without asking for permission or giving credit to the creator. The same license also applies if you are using images for commercial purposes.

  1. Thank you for sharing. Although 80-85% of the photos I use on my own blog are my own (original) I do find myself gravitating to other platforms. Wikimedia Commons and Getty Images I use often.

  2. My two personal favorites are Pixabay and Pexels. You do end up seeing a lot of the same photos on other websites but with some photoshop skills, you can make them look authentic. Thanks for sharing.
